Happy Birthday, America

The 22-year-old who painted this on the back of his mom's house was able to legally purchase a Smith & Wesson M&P15 semi-automatic weapon. Even after he attempted suicide. Even after he threatened his own family and police confiscated a 24" samurai blade and 16 knives.

He used his semi-automatic rifle to gun down citizens at the Highland Park 4th of July parade.

The shock and numbness are wearing off. They are being replaced by anger. The heartache remains.

  1. It is hard to know what to do, and yes anger is replacing the initial shock. I understand that Illinois has fairly tough gun laws, but he purchased guns legally anyway. I saw an interview with the shooter's father signed a parent permission form allowing the nutty kid to buy his guns. The father didn't think he had done anything wrong. Really???? Mom and dad couldn't figure out that their boy had a screw loose??? I have four kids and none of them are murders, and none of them were violent and mentally ill, but I do think there is a place in our laws for parental accountability. Parents should not be buying or giving permission for their kids to buy guns. Maybe mommy and daddy should be charged as well, like happened with one of the recent school shooter's parents. This horrible sh**t is happening so much, it is hard to recall details of each event because they just run together. Anger is the right emotion for what is going on. We all need to be more angry.

  3. Yes, and if you read the article, you'll see that it was that very father he threatened to use that samurai blade on! The police knew this. There has to be a way to keep automatic weapons out of hands of people like this.
