Trifecta

With this week's challenge, I learned a new word: incipit. It's Latin for "it begins," and is the first few words of a book, poem, etc.

This weekend's challenge: give us a 33-word opening line to your book.

She propped herself up on an elbow, looked down and marveled at his sweet, sleeping face, and yet still she asked herself, “Who is he, really? And why am I in this relationship?”

  1. Good beginning to a story. I'd continue reading.

  2. Soooooo, who is he really? Why is she in bed with him? Those are my first two questions! With a few more sentences, I'd surely have more!

  3. Off to a good start! I think this beginning would keep a story going!

  4. Wow. Those are questions you don't want to find yourself asking.

  6. Sticky situation. Haven't we all found ourselves in something like this? Or is it just me? Hmm... awkward meter just knocked up a notch!

    Nice take.

I was thinking the same thing as Renada - what happened to make her question who he was.

I sooo agree with Janna and Renada. If you have to question why, there must be a story behind it. :-) Sounds interesting.

I think that's a question we have all asked ourselves at one time or another.

I want to know why she is asking..x

  10. Your opening line has me wondering how she got to this point and why she's still there. This makes me want to read more.

Yes, how did she get here? I have to know more. Does she find the answers or is the beginning the end?

  12. Nice - The and yet makes it for me. Because she knows what she's got is good. But still...And it's that dissatisfaction, that being unsure that grabs the reader.

  13. Excellent grabber.

I want to know why she suddenly realises she really doesn't know who he is ...

A lot of issues raised to go on with in very little room! I'd be interested to see which ones prove to be the important ones...

  15. From the get-go, I already want to tell this woman to silently grab her stuff and go. Great opening! Glad we could help add a three-dollar word to the vocabulary. :-) Hope to see you back again soon.

There's a huge market for this type of story, so I hope that you're very successful with it (should you continue writing it).
