I love movies and I go often. Yet when I recently saw a list of the box-office champions of all-time, I was surprised that I hadn’t seen any of the Top 5. How could that be? Did I consume all those Sno-Caps, sitting in the dark, watching box-office bombs? No. Here’s the reason: inflation. The average nationwide ticket price today is nearly $7.00, but when Gone with the Wind came out, it only cost 25¢ to get into a matinee. That puts Rhett at a definite disadvantage against Spiderman and Jack Sparrow, doesn’t it? So here are the Top 13 most popular films of all time, adjusted for inflation. I've seen 10, which makes me feel much better about the world. This list is courtesy of Amazon.com, who went ahead and did the math for me. (And, naturally, is willing to sell all 13 DVDs to you.) This is based on box-office receipts. I wonder what the results would be if we factored in sales and rentals. Maybe I’ll track that down for a future TT … 1…. Gone with the Wind (1939) 2. Star Wars (1977) 3. Sound of Music (1965) 4. ET (1982) 5. The Ten Commandments (1956) 6. Titanic (1997) 7. Jaws (1975) 8. Dr. Zhivago (1965) 9. Disney’s Jungle Book (1967) 10. I've seen 11 of these. I'll have to rent Dr. Zhivago, I heard it was good. But I don't think I'll ever watch #13. Way too scary for me! Great TT topic.
ReplyDeleteI've seen all of them, though I'll admit I'm surprised that some made the list. Odd how inflation works, huh?
ReplyDeleteI think I've seen them all. Not sure. Happy TT.
ReplyDeleteI like films but I've only seen 5, maybe 6, on the list.
ReplyDeleteI've seen them all. Not surprised that so many of them are kid/family movies since Disney used to re-release them to theaters ever 6 or 7 years to get a new audience.
ReplyDeletewatched 10 on the list ... but that was eons ago. guess it's time to watch these "oldies" again ... :)
ReplyDeletehappy TT
I have seen EVERY ONE of them and totally agree that they are GREAT movies.
ReplyDelete#13 is my fave of all time .. :) Happy TT!
ReplyDeleteAaugh! I am trying to find a copy of Disney's Jungle Book at Netflix and I can't!
ReplyDeleteI've seen more of those than I expected to. Given how few movies I watch (Netflix is brand-new in my house), I'm surprised.
Happy TT!
I've only seen 8. I need to get crackin on my classic movie list.
ReplyDeleteHaven't seen as many of them, but a great list though.
ReplyDeleteI've seen 1, 2, 6, 7, 12 and 13
ReplyDeleteNo LOTR? Shocking!
ReplyDeleteHappy TT! I have seen 9 of those.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen a lot of them. :/ But even tho people made fun of it, I thought Titanic was amazing!!
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, and movies here are $9.75.
Oh great list! LOVE # 1
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen Dr. Zhivago...need to get that one.
Happy TT!
I've seen all of those. Which surprises me, because I'm never up to date on lists like this.
ReplyDeleteI've seen 11 out of the 13!!! Great list!!! I've always loved The Sound of Music and ET!
ReplyDeleteHappy Thursday dear!
I have only seen a few of these. I guess when it comes to classic movies, I am not the box-office blockbuster type.

Jaws...eeeee....I still have goosebumps when I think of it! After watching Jaws as a kid, I never let any body parts hanging out of the bedframe. Getting down from bed to go to the toilet at night was agony. I know sharks don't live under beds...but still!
ReplyDeleteHappy TT!
It always bugs me when they don't adjust for inflation.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure I've seen all these, but I don't remember a whole lot about The Ten Commandments and Ben Hur.
Hm, I have seen 10 of these as well. But only on tv mostly. And I liked maybe 3... ;o)
ReplyDeleteI've seen all of them with the exception of numbers 8, 11, & 13. Everytime I try to watch number 13 something always interrupts me watching it. I don't think it was meant to be.
ReplyDeleteGone with the Wind is truly amazing!
I've seen them all, but #8! Always in DVD form, though.
ReplyDeleteHappy TT!
Liked your list!
Wow, I'm surprised that I've seen all 13 of those... Did I like all of them, now that's another question. LOL Happy TT!
ReplyDeleteInteresting TT and I have seen most of them. But the list is totally different than the one I have seen at IMDB.com. Last I heard even with inflation, Titanic own'd on worldwide gross.
ReplyDeleteThanks for heading me over to imdb, Starrlight. I love this stuff! If it wasn't for this pesky JOB I would wander about it all day. Unfortunately, their list says at the bottom that it is not adjusted for inflation. When you consider how many times GWTW has been re-released, and that original tickets went for as little as 25¢, I don't see how the animated Madagascar could possibly be considered more profitable. Still, imdb is a great resource and I appreciate you sending me back to it.
ReplyDeleteSparky Duck sent me - wow, I'm kinda surprised by some of those.
ReplyDeleteHappy TT13!
This was a good list that I would have to agree with. It is true about the price of movie tickets. That is just ridiculous. I rent all my movies from Netflix. I have no problems waiting. :o)
ReplyDeleteI have seen all of them, but am surprised at a few that made it, compared to what's not there. Disney's Jungle book? Don't get that one.
ReplyDeleteI saw at least partly all of them,I think!!
ReplyDeleteAnd is good to see who are the real blockbuster!!(And that explain too why the record seems to be a new one each year!!)
would you believe I have never seen Gone with the Wind?
ReplyDeleteNew 13er here...howdy. :)
ReplyDeleteI've seen 10 of those...I'm missing most of the oldies, like Ben Hur, the 10 Commandments etc. I saw Gone With the Wind.
