THIRTEEN ROLES
PLAYED BY
ONE OF TV'S
MOST POPULAR ACTORS
When I was off on disability leave, I watched a lot of TV. And, consequently, saw a lot of Allan Melvin (1923-2008). He was:
1) Sam, Alice's butcher-beau on The Brady Bunch.
2) Sol (or Sam), Rob's Army buddy on The Dick Van Dyke Show.
A real menace to Mayberry, terrorizing characters on The Andy Griffith Show as ...
3) Payroll robber Clarence "Doc" Malloy
4) Conman Jake, part of a scam used-car ring
5) The escaped convict who ruins Andy's fishing trip
6) Gomer's Pyle's service buddy Charlie on spin-off Gomer Pyle, USMC
7) Mr. Wheeler of Hooterville on Green Acres
8) A nosy neighbor on My Favorite Martian
9) Archie Bunker's friend Barney on All in the Family
10) The voice of Magilla Gorilla
11) The voice of Drooper on The Banana Splits
12) The voice of Yogi Bear
13) The voice of of both stone-agers and jetsetters on The Flintstones and The Jetsons
These are the thoughts and observations of me — a woman of a certain age. (Oh, my, God, I'm 65!) I'm single. I'm successful enough (independent, self supporting). I live just outside Chicago, the best city in the world. I'm an aunt and a friend. I feel that voices like mine are rather underrepresented online or in print. So here I am. If my musings resonate with you, please visit my blog again sometime.
Oh, wow. I had no idea he was in all these shows. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteClearly, sometimes it's not the 'Great Actor' who get the roles, but the serviceable, malleable workman. I guess one can do one film for multi millions, or millions of smaller projects for lesser bucks apiece & still come out ahead of the game.
ReplyDeleteKeen eye.
enlightening
ReplyDeleteVery interesting. You named some of my favorite shows as a kid. The Brady Bunch, Gomer Pyle, The Jetsons, and I haven't thought about The Banana Splits in a whole lot of years lol
ReplyDeleteI used to think my dad looked (and acted lots of time) like Archie Bunker.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Happy T13!
Wow, so many things I never knew he was in. Thank you for sharing this!

Wow, who knew? Fun list, thank you!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great list. I love him as Sam the Butcher and I always enjoy his appearances on Andy Griffith (which we still watch).
ReplyDeleteSick- how we both noticed this :)
ReplyDeleteHave a great Thursday!
