Thursday Thirteen #92 -- One reason why we fight over the remote ...

THE THIRTEEN TOP FILMS
OF ALL TIME …

FIRST AS JUDGED BY MEN,

THEN AS JUDGED BY WOMEN

If you're a movie fan, you should have IMDB.com bookmarked. It's a treasure trove of verified information and fascinating trivia about films (TV, too). The film buffs who run this site recently asked their registered users to name the top movies of all time. I think it's interesting how the boys' list differs from the girls'. Here I thought Titanic would be the ultimate chick flick, but I guess it's The Lord of Rings Trilogy.

First, the men have their say:

1. The Godfather (1972)
2. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
3. The Godfather, Part II (1974)
4. The Dark Knight (2008)
5. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966)
6. Pulp Fiction (1994)
7. Star Wars – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
8. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975)
9. Schindler’s List (1993)
10. Twelve Angry Men (1957)
11. The Seven Samurai (1954)
12. Star Wars (1977)
13. Goodfellas (1990)

Now here are the top films of all times, as rated by women:

1. Shawshank Redemption (1994)
2. The Dark Knight (2008)
3. Schindler’s List (1993)
4. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
5. Rear Window (1954)
6. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
7. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975)
8. The Godfather (1972)
9. Casablanca (1942)
10. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
11. The Usual Suspects (1995)
12. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
13. Gone with the Wind (1939)

Well that's rather interesting. I'd have expected more, well, chick flicks on the women's list and more action movies on the men's. Good to know that decent taste overpowers big budgets and target demographics.

  4. Some good films there, but I'd have expected more older films.

I've seen some on both lists and probably have enjoyed them equally. I would never put any of the LOTR films in a top ten though, or even a top one hundred.

  7. I was pleasantly surprised to see "12 Angry Men" make the men's list. I just watched it for the umpteenth time a few days ago.

The women's list is really surprising. I was expecting more female-oriented flicks like "Pretty Woman", "When Harry Met Sally", and "Breakfast At Tiffany's".

Wow. I never ever thought about this. Visual medium - tv and movies - doesn't leave much of an imprint so I don't really care what we watch.

    huh.

  11. It is interesting that Shawshank is at the top of both lists. Not surprising about Gone with the Wind on one list only!

  12. Great lists...good to see that there were some which overlapped both lists. Happy TT.

Well I have to say that those are some of the best reasons I have yet to read to fight over the remote!

    Happy fighting!

  14. You can tell I'm not much of a movie person. Out of both lists, I've seen SIX.

Dark Knight doesn't belong on either list.

Where is When Harry Met Sally or The Princess Bride?

Great list! Glad to see Shawshank at the list for both men and women--hubby and I both enjoy that one.

    LOTR? Really ladies? LOL

Nice lists! Thanks for sharing :)

  20. Wow, I didn't expect that at all. I would have thought more men would be crazy about Lord of the Rings, and I would have thought there would be more romances on the women's list.

    Huh!

    Happy TT!

  21. That's interesting. I've seen most of them, and agree that they're good movies, but I don't think any of them would top my top-10 list. Of course, my top-10 list would probably change daily, depending on my mood. :)

  22. my testosterone levels must be high, because I think I like more on the mens list lol. Where do they come up with these stats?

  23. It's interesting to compare guy choices to girl choices.
