Thirteen most profitable movies of all time. It costs $9 to see a movie at my local theater. That's why this list of box office champs with all those new millennium titles seems like bullshit to me. After all in 1939, movie goers saw Gone with the Wind for 25¢. In 1965, a ticket to The Sound of Music cost about $1.00. So the following list, which is adjusted for inflation, makes way more sense to me.
By the way, this is based solely on tickets sold. TV, rental and streaming revenue is not included. I imagine if it was, you'd see The Wizard of Oz on this list, too.

I have seen most of the Star Wars movies (I missed the last release and don't subscribe to Disney.) I'm not "into" Star Wars like some people. But I am into story lines of good versus evil and how good ultimately overcomes. Much like Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, Star Wars is a world where bad seems great and good seems less great, but it takes good to make a better world (or universe). Kind of like today's reality. The good people have to step up, or the bad wins.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I went to the 1977 first to be released Star Wars for our first date. We saw the next two sequels, but after that I was done with Star Wars. Even my husband, who is quite a sci-fi fan got tired of it. This is a very interesting list. I have seen most, but not all of the movies on it.
ReplyDeleteI've seen them all, except not The Exorcist after it scared my sister out of her wits. I saw Dr. Z at the drive-inn when I was a teenager and didn't understand it so stopped trying to pay attention.
ReplyDeleteI got dragged to The Empire Strikes Back when it came out. Dragged. I did not want to go. But in my family, that wasn't an option. Of course, I was dragged to many now iconic films (and some real duds). I was wrong about Star Wars. I enjoyed it once I was there.
