Here is how to play:
If you had the opportunity to do a 1-year internship in a company or field completely unrelated to your current career or specialty, what would be your top 5 choices?
1) Pet sitter: I'd love to be the one to coax the cat out from under the bed when you're on vacation, or walk your dog when you're working late.
2) Lawyer: I've watched so many episodes of Law & Order that I believe that, with only a 1-year internship, I could pass the bar. Thinking of bars leads me to ...
3) Bartender: But only in a nice, high-end bar. I'd love to check out the clothes, see who is with who, and be paid to stay on top of all the cool new drinks.
4) Bookstore/cardshop: I think this would be neat because aren't people generally happy when they're in bookstores and/or cardshops? Except for the big Mother's Day rush, or the Harry Potter launch, there probably aren't too many real crunch times, especially in an independent store.
5) Mail carrier. At first it seems like a weird choice, but I've given this some thought. You'd get exercise every day. You'd know what magazines your neighbors are reading. You can tell where their friends went on vacation by reading their postcards.
So now here's the moment you have been waiting for … I'm tagging:
Book Mama
Sparky Duck
Malcolm
Mo
Alison
Let me know if you respond ...
These are the thoughts and observations of me — a woman of a certain age. (Oh, my, God, I'm 65!) I'm single. I'm successful enough (independent, self supporting). I live just outside Chicago, the best city in the world. I'm an aunt and a friend. I feel that voices like mine are rather underrepresented online or in print. So here I am. If my musings resonate with you, please visit my blog again sometime.
What an interesting list of internship choices!!

I can vouch for #4 (or is it #5? the bookstore one). Working in a bookstore is really, really fun. Of course, retail hours (and the holiday rush) really stink, which is why I don't work in the actual store any longer.
ReplyDelete1. stone mason- there is something about trades like that... they are becoming lost arts.
ReplyDelete2. chef/cook- i love to cook and would like to try it "professionally".
3. police officer- always sounded interesting to me... very challenging, but very rewarding.
4. writer- just to write and write and write and see what happens.
5. spanish language major- always had a real interest in the spanish language and i have taught myself over the years... would love to get a year in and learn it well.
Yep, I may love you right about now
ReplyDeleteI love #1, I have been looking for it as a pt job. Bartender would be great except for the 2am 6 days a week.g
