Summer Stock. "Forget your troubles, c'mon get happy!" My favorite Garland musical number of all time. Perhaps even my favorite dance number of all time.
The Sound of Music. I don't remember the name of the folk dance that Maria is teaching the children, but Captain Von Trapp offers to be her partner and it's evident to all of us, even the Baroness (boo! hiss!), that a certain novice was never going to become a nun.
The Way We Were. It's the Big College Dance. Gorgeous, letterman Hubbell crosses the dance floor, and the social divide, to cut in on frumpy, unpopular Katie and her gawky date.* It's impossibly romantic. Perhaps because Streisand finally found a partner we believe she could and would let lead.
*James Woods in his movie debut.
fabulous--love your descriptions of Sound of Music and The Way We Were. Loved both of those movies
ReplyDeleteNice choices! It's fun to hear about the ones we've forgotten about or never knew about in the first place...I have a list now for my next library trip!
ReplyDeleteI love that scene in Sound of Music. The dance is called the Landler (the "a" has an umlaut over it but I don't know how to do that on my keyboard).
ReplyDeleteWhat great movies and not so obvious. :-)
ReplyDeleteI love that scene in Sound of Music. Christopher Plummer was so handsome *sigh*
ReplyDeleteOnce again, you don't disappoint with your classic picks! Garland especially - now I've got that tune stuck in my head ;0)
ReplyDeleteI chose something from The Sound of Music too. Love that movie!
